3 questions for Baptiste Vandaele, graphic designer

You are working on the Wellness area for the 2026 edition of EquipHotel. What inspired the design concept for this space?

Baptiste Vandaele : I started from the idea of a construction game, bringing together azulejos, cement tiles and geometric shapes. I wanted it to be highly decorative, drawing on the floral world of an Andalusian garden and a more medieval one focused on botany and medicinal plants… A way of inviting visitors on a journey through patterns, time and floral art, at the heart of a space dedicated to well-being, where people should naturally feel good. For this scenography, I am working in partnership with Sotexpro on printed and woven fabrics, as well as customised seating.

Colour is omnipresent in your work, particularly in the projects you create for Mama Shelter hotels. Do you feel contemporary hospitality is not colourful enough?

Baptiste Vandaele : Hotels are often rather understated — and very beige! Yet it is not difficult to stand out from the competition by using colour, not necessarily in a room, but rather in a corridor, a restaurant, a bar… In regular collaboration with the Mama Shelter group’s architecture studio, I have just taken part in the renovation of the restaurant at Mama Shelter Porte de Bagnolet in Paris, creating a floor pattern inspired by the world of the bakery and a highly theatrical curtain scheme, all in shades of orange and red.

What kind of hotel would you most like to stay in today?

Baptiste Vandaele : I would happily stay at the Casa dell’Arte Club House in Lisbon, for its old-world décor in a pure Portuguese style, punctuated with contemporary artworks. The combination works beautifully.

Also worth noting: graphic designer Baptiste Vandaele is collaborating with agency DL2A on the creation of textile décors for the VIP lounge area at EquipHotel 2026.

A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts de Nancy, Baptiste Vandaele creates distinctive worlds of his own that transport the viewer elsewhere…
